Looks like a winner! The RS275-0001 relays are around 88 - 89 Ohms resistance,
2 in series as shown would be just under 180 Ohms, so the 3rd larger coil would be
comparable to 180 Ohms. Shoot for 150 to 210 ohms, give or take. I have run 24
volts on 89 ohms, (1 relay coil) because of the very short duty cycle, but output
was not that much higher, and the adapted brass contact sticks after a few hours.
NOTE THAT only 1 contact is used, coils 2 and 3 are coils only.

couple of questions if you dont mind
-could you replace the large coil with two more relays just connected through the coil connections
-if yes would a huge bank of relays do the job for higher voltages

reason i ask is the relays appear to be cheaper at the mo than buying copper wire plus im still rubbish at winding coils

Yes, but a single contact can only handle so much "spark" and the higher
voltage makes this worse. You could, however, simply use more contacts, and
the factory relays with NC contacts are far superior to the adapted RS275-0001

In general, you have the right idea. Always apply OHM'S LAW to keep the ratios close.
For series circuits, it seems 4 ohms per volt is good. (89ohm/24V) while the relay is
actually rated 12v @ 89 Ohm, our short (on/off) duty cycle allows 24 volts easily. I
have learned so much about how the mechanical relay reacts, I should make a
new post with my "findings" (I'm sure others have found this too).

The problem of adding coil is spark, this is my primary reason to use solid state version using 555 and 2N3055. The transistor do get hot as fast as relay though.

The good thing is that the relay contact only handles primary voltage,
in this case 24V DC. But the larger (or more in number) coils produce
more CEMF and radiant output. I am quickly looking to be convert to
solid state myself, but time is scarce as I am working out of town...
