 Post subject: Transistor as a switch instead of relay contacts ?

Has anyone used a transistor in place of mechanical relay contacts ? would it then make it into a circuit more like a transistor driven flyback driver ?

Yes, the fan circuit is exactly that but you don't have to use a fan, you can use a transformer
