I have tried this already, I found them not too good. I think it is because of the high resistance and the fact that the coils are almost completely surrounded with iron.
However i am butchering 4 ballasts and rewinding them, to make coils for a larger prototype motor.
Possibly I could use the ballast after the car coil. The higher resistance is
so it will use less current with the higher input voltage (110V AC)
